PAL’s sports programs strive to increase the physical activity of young people, while decreasing risk-taking behaviors by providing opportunities for youth and teens from low-income areas to play in well equipped, organized sports leagues.
The Sports and Recreation Department at PAL provides a model sports curriculum for all the centers, in addition to organizing and facilitating leagues, tournaments, and special events for over 13,000 youth annually. PAL’s sports and recreation programs keep young people engaged in positive youth development activities and reinforce the concepts of discipline, leadership, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
New York City’s Police Athletic League is the first and finest civilian-run PAL in the country. Founded in 1914, PAL has served the city’s young people for over 100 years. PAL provides recreational, educational, cultural and social activities to 30,000 boys and girls annually. It is also the city’s largest, independent, nonprofit youth organization.
