Summer 2021: This summer the Mayor Bill de Blasio, Schools Chancellor Miesha Porter and the Department of Youth and Community Development have announced a novel Summer Rising plan to keep the students of New York City active in their learning through the summer. In this blog post we will share a few details of this exciting summertime opportunity for the city’s youth.
In a partnership between the New York City Department of Education and DYCD’s school-based enrichment programming, the city will be offering a comprehensive summer program for students. PAL is proud to be among the organizations working to develop engaging summer programming for the City’s youth, in partnership with schools across the city.
These free programs will combine academic and cultural enrichment to keep students engaged and learning through the summer months. Summer Rising programs will be full day and in-person experiences for students K-8 lasting six weeks, five days a week for students in grades K-5, and four days a week for students in grades 6-8.
Programming for students aged K-8, can include academic classes, field trips, arts activities, and outdoor recreation. These programs will serve to bridge the school year and allow students to re-connect with each another and with their schools, “to ensure continued learning, and provide avenues for recreation, exploration, and fun.”
